Review: Longwood The Shearer 2007 Shiraz

This is a wine that proves that screw caps don't necessarily mean that the wine is cheap or tasteless.

Of course Australia has been a leader in replacing cork with screw caps having done so for a number of years now.  In this case, the Longwood Shiraz is a delicious wine at a very affordable price (under $20).

Full enough to stand up to a steak on the grill yet not so strong that it doesn't drink well on its on this is a wine I would definitely recommend giving a try.

Let us know how you liked it.  Do you have a favorite Shiraz?  Let us know.  You can contact us here.

Wine Review: Predator 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel

Predator is quickly becoming one of our go to wines.  Their Zin is notable for the smoky flavors that are not usually associated with so much as with a Cabernet Sauvignon.  Beyond the smoky this wine still has the spicy zip that we enjoy from a good Zinfandel.

At 14% alcohol this wine avoids the pitfall of many Zins that are so high in alcohol content that they literally burn our mouth.

At less than $20 this is a nice wine to enjoy either with snacks/appetizers or with a spicier dish such as Pasta in Vodka sauce.

Our Favorite Cab

I really enjoy and admire the folks at The Wine Stalker and The Reverse Wine Snob for their focus on finding quality wines at a value price.  I was fortunate enough to work for a master of wine who shared in the belief that one can find good wine without necessarily spending a lot of money.

That's what makes Louis M. Martinin cabernet sauvignon one of our favorites.  At less than $20/bottle you get a lot of quality for not a lot of money.

The wine is easy to drink and I find it works well with the usual mix of steak or other red meats.  The wine can also be enjoyed with appetizers / snacks (on this occasion we were snacking on Buffalo Chicken dip) or works fine all by itself.  I definitely would recommend giving it a try and let us know your thoughts http://www.flyfishingsimplified.com/#!contact/cyha

Bogle 2012 Zinfandel with Shrimp over Angel Hair Pasta in a Vodka Sauce = Delicious

It seems we had a very successful pairing of this zin and a pasta dish that was just a bit on the spicy side.  If we had made the shrimp and pasta in a garlic butter we would have gone with an Albarino but in this case the spicy zip of the vodka sauce was nicely complimented with the peppery flavor of the Zin.

At less than $20 a bottle (and bear in mind I live in PA - which has some of the most expensive prices) this is definitely a good value wine.

If you get a chance to try it or have tried it let us know what you think.  http://www.flyfishingsimplified.com/#!contact/cyha

Uber: I'm no longer an Uber Virgin!

Most of you have probably heard of Uber the ride sharing service but may not have actually tried the service.  Some of you may not be familiar with what Uber is.  Since we all share interests that get us 'out and about' I thought I would write a post about my Uber experience.

https://www.uber.com/

It is funny how things work out, I had heard about Uber probably a year or so ago and had mentioned it to my girl friend and my daughter but I myself had never had a need to use the service.  My girl friend found herself in need of a ride from LAX to her hotel for a business trip and decided to use Uber and her experience was very positive.

This past week I was in Fort Myers, Florida on a short trip hoping to find a used RV that I would purchase and then drive home (I had flown down).  It turned out that luck was with me and I did indeed find an RV in my price range but now found myself with a bit of a issue.  Here I was in Punta Gorda (where I was staying) with a rental car (from the Ft. Myers airport) and needing to pick up the RV in Ft. Myers.  I decided that the best plan of action aka least cost would be to use Uber.

Step one was returning my rental car to the airport.  Once inside the terminal I pulled up the Uber app on my iPhone that I had downloaded the night before from the Apps Store.  When you download the app make sure you go through the registration process so that you are ready to secure a ride.  As part of the registration process you provide Uber with your credit card number and info as all fares are paid for via credit card.

Note: you can get $20 off your first ride by using the promo code a8xsh

After pulling up the Uber app on my phone it found my current location (you have to allow access to locations services) and then asked for my destination address.  After entering the address the app showed me that a driver was 9 minutes away along with his first name and the make of his vehicle.

To help him find me I texted him (you have an option to text or call) with my description and the door I was standing at.  I could actually track his location as he neared the terminal.  A few short minutes later he was pulling up and ready for me.

He turned out to be a great guy, nice clean car, and got me to my scheduled meeting early.  I later rated him a 5 out of 5 (you'll receive an email from Uber).  Uber will also email you a receipt for your fare.  Don't forget to tip your driver, these folks aren't making a lot of money on the fare only.

I would highly recommend Uber for your next ride.  Much cheaper than a taxi, better service and a chance to meet some pretty cool people!
